TEACHER BARGAINING UNIT

The Teacher Bargaining Unit represents close to 1,200 accredited secondary Teachers staffing the public high schools in the Halton Region.  These seventeen high schools serve the communities of Burlington, Halton Hills, Milton, and Oakville.
Many are deployed in the classroom to provide expertise in the traditional subject areas of English, Mathematics, Science, Business Studies, Art, Music, Languages, Physical Education, and Technical Studies. Others are employed in Guidance, Special Education, Self-Reliant Learning, and Alternative Education programs such as STEP, SCORE, SMART, and the Heritage program.
Our ultimate goal is to protect and enhance public education in Ontario.

Sarah Robertson, a Teacher at EC Drury, was awarded the Inclusive Educator's Award at this year's Annual General Assembly. Sarah initiated the Energy Challenge Day for students in the Life Skills and Centre programs to allow these students a chance to socialize and participate in a student lead activity day specific to their needs. She is also founded the Strength Within Conferences for teen girls in Halton and surrounding boards. Sarah has also been awarded the Robinson Travel Fellowship by the provincial OSSTF

1) What do you do if you are asked to coach a sport or supervise a dance or become a member of a committee?

Answer:
Nothing, unless you want to. These are voluntary activities.

2) How many supervisions do I have to do? How many on-calls do I have to do?

Answer
:This year a full-time teacher is contractually responsible for a maximum of 50 half-periods of APAs (supervisions/on-calls), of which a maximum of 24 may be used for on-calls. Part-time teachers' APAs are prorated.

3) Does my department head have the right assess my work as a teacher?

Answer
: No, a department head must not act in any role which involved the evaluation, hiring, interviewing, promotion or firing or assessment of a fellow union member.

4) If YOU suspect that a student is being abused, what should you do?

Answer
: You have a legal obligation to report directly to the Children's Aid Society in your area.

5) Can your on-call period occur whenever you are not teaching?

Answer:
It can occur during your assigned prep time, but not necessarily on a specific day.

6) Is it part of a teacher’s required duty to provide students with a mark before they go into exams?
Answer:
NO

7) I have spend a large sum of money on my shoes and I’m very proud of them.  They are all an extension of me.  However, I fear they do not meet the guidelines for safe and proper footwear.  Will I have to dump the pumps for Dr. Martins?

Answer:
No you do not have to at this time as they are guidelines.  However safety is a joint effort of both management and workers .  You should ensure that your footwear reflects the conditions that exist in your workplace for your personal safety.

8) I have noticed recently that the ceiling tiles in my classroom are hanging down. I fear that they may fall and injure myself or one of my students.  What should I do to rectify the situation?

Answer:
You should immediately bring this to the attention of  the administration. (I would suggest through an email as creating the paper trail is important)  You should also complete as workplace hazards report and file it both with administration and your worker representative on your school’s Joint Health and Safety Committee.
